The Mighty Steller’s Sea Eagle: Monarch of the Skies

While the Steller’s sea eagle (орлан білоплечий) is most famous for its coastal habitats, this regal bird occasionally ventures into savanna-like river valleys and open grasslands near water bodies. With its massive wingspan of up to 2.5 meters and a striking white-shouldered appearance, the Steller’s sea eagle commands attention wherever it flies.

These eagles are unmatched hunters, preying on fish, small mammals, and even other birds. They are often seen perched on tall trees or rocky outcroppings, scanning the landscape with their piercing yellow eyes. Their vision is among the sharpest in the animal kingdom, allowing them to spot prey from incredible distances. A remarkable story highlights this ability: a Steller’s sea eagle was seen swooping down to snatch a fish from a river over 100 meters away, showcasing precision and power.

Social by nature, they are known to form small communities during the breeding season, building enormous nests high up in trees. These nests, made of sticks and lined with softer materials, can weigh up to 1,000 pounds and are reused year after year. Their young are fiercely protected, with both parents taking turns guarding the nest.

Sadly, like many creatures, the Steller’s sea eagle faces threats from habitat destruction and climate change. Efforts to safeguard their environments are critical for preserving these awe-inspiring birds, which embody the untamed beauty of the wild.
